Felix Homebirth – Cecily
Ok I will skip all the boring prelabour for weeks and weeks and then early labour since saturday evening cos we all know about that!
Anyway, pick up where I left off which I think was about 8.30 tuesday morning. I was timing the contractions and they were between 5 and 7 mins. They were getting really intense, so I rang the delivery suite. I thought I was being a wimp. The MW turned up very quickly afterwards as she had just gone past to drop her kids off at school anyway. So I think that was about 8.45. They were every 3 minutes by then. She set the G&A up whilst I charged around the place. Michael took Alastair to nursery at 9, and then when he got back we set the pool up. Whilst the pool was being filled I started using the G&A as I was starting to be sick from the pain. Again, I was thinking ‘what a wimp’. The pool was ready at about 9.30, so we had a quick exam between contractions and I was 6cm and they were still every 3mins. We got in the pool and the relief was immense.
I had a whale of a time in there for an hour, got to 9cm, then we realised something was seriously slowing things down. So I got out, we broke my waters and they were still clear, and then got back in the pool again. Things sped up again, but baby wasn’t descending properly. I was feeling what was going on with every contraction, and unfortunately although I was fully dilated and NEEDED to push, he kept flying back up the birth canal!
At around 12.30 we thought ok, lets try and have a feel what’s going on. So whilst I contracted, the MWs examined me. Unfortunately, my vaginal wall was so swollen it was actually blocking his exit and there was no way I was going to be able to carry on without trying to shift him. He had been very active during the labour, and had swivelled so the pressure wasn’t right to bring him down. I was hyper aware of everything going on, and had complete confidence in the MWs and my body, but I was beyond exhausted.
We got out of the pool and I used a variety of positions to try and shift him down. In the end, at about 1.30pm, the MWs could see I was at the end of my reserves. So we made the decision to transfer in and carry on trying until the ambulance crew got there.
At this point, Michael was beside himself with worry, and my mother was sat on the stairs having a nervous breakdown and watching Seb who was in the playroom. It was me and my dad and the MWs. The MWs knew I didn’t really want to go to hospital, so said ‘right Cecily, the ambulance is on it’s way, lets try one last time and get this baby out’.
I had given up on the G&A whilst trying to move him. I ended up sat reclining slightly and hanging onto the G&A canister (it was a big one in a frame but my dad still had to brace it for me) and holding onto my dad with the other hand. I had one MW literally holding me open to keep that swollen wall out of the baby’s way. He FINALLY decided he was going to descend properly! I used every last bit of my strength and could feel every mm of his descent. He came out facing my left leg, which was part of the reason he hadn’t been able to get out sooner, he had the cord around his neck, although because I was in such control of what I was doing I managed to stop pushing so they could unravel it, and then his body was born very easily at 1.51pm.
Once he was out, he came straight to me, but was blue and pretty floppy, and didn’t want to respond to stimulation, so he was whisked away for some oxygen whilst the other MW examined
me. Luckily there was screaming coming from the corner of the room, and I had very minimal damage considering. No tears, the slightest of grazes, but a LOT of swelling both inside and out. Baby had had a rather large poo as he was born, so his weight of 8lb 8oz was probably pretty accurate lol
I cuddled baby for a little while, and we waited for the placenta to come away before we let the ambulance go again, because of all of the swelling. Once that had come away we were declared fine! Baby latched on, and we cuddled up for a bit whilst the MWs and Michael started the clearup.
I was still exhausted for over 24hours afterwards, I am only just starting to feel human again now!
